Google Docs

First of all, I love google. Even though I think they are slowly taking over the world. Google docs has helped me organize my life and have a place to store important documents. I use google docs to store my most recent resume, help my boy friend keep track of his music requirements each semester, and plan supper each night.

Google is awesome!

LibWorm

Is the new library a digital library? Will we be seeing more institutional repositories? Should gaming be apart of the library? Do students want digital books? Should we loan out digital books readers?

These are things I am interested in reading about. This search engine was helpful. On a scale of one to ten with one being least and ten being the greatest. I rate LibWorm at a 7.5. I got way too much information being thrown at me. I also got the same title listed multiple times.

I did find some helpful link on IR's. I am about to be getting involved in my local IR and barely have a clue. I found a link that introduced what an IR is and a link on guidlines for an IR. Very helpful.

Library Thing

Hey girl do your thing, do your thing....

I am doing my thing on library thing. It is VERY easy to add my books. I have not had the time to add all my books. Such a sad thing. Though I have been putting in more time creating my wish list. I have a lot of series that are not complete.

DIGG

Do you digg it? If you like news then you should. Users search there favorite news sites and post to digg.com. Other users then decide if they like the stories. If they do then they digg it. Before learning of digg.com I did not know that the users submitted the stories. This is a very interesting site to see what news is most popular amoung digg members.

I digg it!

Delicious

I was JUST wishing I had my bookmarks from my work computer while I was at another computer in a workshop. This is perfect! As soon as I get home, my personal computer bookmarks. Though I am not entirely sure of the name. I would have never put the name of the site and the purpose of the site together.

Tagging

Tagging most certainly belongs in the library! The best way I can see tagging used is for personal assignments and for classes. Say you have three papers due in two different classes. While researching paper one, all articles/books/resources can be tagged classApaper1. Then alter the tag for the other papers and classes. Does this created a clutter of irrelevant tags for other users? I do not think so! Because others in the class present and future would be able to find relevant articles quickly. A tag search can be truncated and therefore still useful if the class name is apart of the tag. Professors could also implement tags into their lectures. Professors are constantly assigning outside reading. Instead of having an article or package of articles put on reserve, a tag could be used instead. Tagging very much complements the subject headings. A user can use subject heading to find specific tags and tags to find specific subject headings. Also, tagging should make the subject heading more visible to users. They will both aide the research process and locating of material. For all of the above possibilities and other potential tagging has to offer, this should definitely be encouraged.

Twitter

That was easy!

My twitter is the same as my IM, troolycrazy.

Finding people and organizations was easier than facebook. I am following our library and some people here. Along with one of my favorite music artist. She is coming out with a new album. Exciting! I am also able to follow news from my future Alma mater.

The last time I heard about twitter was last week. Our library had signed up for a webniar and were invited to follow on twitter. By using the webinars hashtag this was an easy thing to do. Very entertaining as well.

NING

I am not impressed with ning even though it has a good concept. Google allows you to serach for pages and you get the orgs. actually web site. Facebook lets you serach too and you can comment and become involved. Then there is also usually a link to the web site. I feel (and I could be wrong) that ning will becoming a thing of the past. There are too many others avenues to take to find what you are interested in finding on the web. I also feel facebook does a better job. Of course it just could be that facebook is more estabilished and ning is an up and comming site. Time will tell.

IM

Trillian
troolycrazy

Instant messaging is something I have been doing since junior high. I lived far away from my school and kept up with my friends via IM. I also have made some new friends via IM. One of my closest friends today actually was because I randomly decided to IM someone. Today I am not really into meeting new people online but keeping in touch with those closest to me. I mostly use my trillian account to text family and friends. Yes, I said text. I have added a small handful of family and close friend's phone numbers to my buddy lists. This way when they are not online I can still contact them. Instant Messining is my conection to everyone I care about and my means of contacting people in emergencies.

More Facebook

I have 40 groups and 18 pages. Most of these are silly things that I feel describe my personality. Others are groups I affiliate with such as the high school I graduated from, the college I went to, and my place of employment. I get a lot of friend requests from people I do not know. As a rule I only friend people I actually know. However, through my college I have one friend who randomly contacted me. This friend is only an internet friend but we talk on a semi regular basis. It is kind of like having a pen pal.

2.0

As I emerge myself more into the 2.0 technology I begin to make being involved on a personal and professional level a higher priority. The web 2.0 videos really hit home for me on a personal and professional level. If the web is us then I am impacting the world by adding information to the web. When I think of adding information I automatically begin to think of work. I am a cataloger and what I do is add information to our records. Not only is this information added to the marc record but it is also an addition to the world wide collection of information. My boss says that we do not catalog for our university but for google. Google crawls many many sites and gleans all it can. For a library whose business is to collect information, I feel that every librarian and satff should be emersing themselves web 2.0 technology. The web is how our wrold operates. It is where we go for information. In the information business, we need to be a runner in the ever evolving technology that is bringing the world together.

Facebook

I have had a facebook since I was in college. I use this to keep up with friends I do not see on a regular basis, share photos with family far away, and join groups who are important to me. Our library just created a social web site/ personality policy for sites such as facebook, wikis, blogs, and etc. There was a facebook group created for one of our branch libraries by a student who was advertising for us. While we appreciated the excited we did not have any control over the content. Action is going to be taken to have the group taken down and discussion about various departments creating groups. It is apparently wanted by our students. In my department, we have a wiki through the university that we post to. I hope to see plans for more social networking for our IR.

Google Reader

THIS IS SO AWESOME!!!

I use goggle for everything! I hate having to bookmark the sites that I follow and this is so much easier. Google is the first place I go anyways and now I am going to do my personal best to make it the only place (aside from online bills).

Comic Strip

I made a comic strip page once on a program on my computer. Sadly I did not play with the program more. For this reason I choose comic strip generator for thing 5. Once at the site though I had no idea what I wanted to create. After much browsing and trying to decide something funny to say I decided I was not funny. Instead I went with my favorite quote I try to live by and one of my favorite cartoon characters. Getting to this step was the most difficult thing about this task. Adding my quote, saving my image and posting to my blog seemed like a cake walk. This was a lot of fun and I hope to find time to play with this more in the future.

Flickr mashups

I choose to spell the name of my blog. This was fun. It is like writing my name on my notebook. However this is my blog and I can't really write my name on it. This gave me an opportunity to do so. Looks pretty snazzy.

Flickr

I have never understood the excitement of flickr. After exploring the site I am beginning to understand how flickr differs from face & space. Flickr is (or can be) more involved than the pics you can find on face & space. This being said, I can see A LOT more drama for those deeply involved in flickr. Facebook is in my opinion and experiences creates gossip, stalking, and drama. A picture speaks a thousand words and perception is reality. At this point in time with a facebook and a myspace I do not feel like I also need a flickr. What I liked most about flickr that I could maybe embrace later on is the ability to make stuff. For example, a blurb photobook, moo (something I am really sure what it is but something I will explore further), and custom holiday cards.

I searched pictures of frogs today. Frogs. I actually just had a frogmark tattooed on my back. Frogs are the cutest animal that come in all sizes. The picture that I found was litterally a hand full of frogs. I hadn't ever seen frogs that small that were not tadpoles.

Purpose

I have been working as a library assistant II for the past 3 years and am currently applying to a master program and obtain a degree in Information Science. I have recently graduated with a BA in Sociology. I worked full time while obtaining my degree at my current and will continue to do so once in graduate school. I plan on taking online cources to help out the balance of attending school full time and working full time.

The purpose of this blog is to participate in a program learning about Web 2.0. An email was recently forwarded to all in the library encouraging us to participate in this multi-library program hosted by North Texas 23. To help us explore Web 2.0 tools, 23 things were created and thing one was to create a blog. This blog will be used to reflect upon the 23 things as I work through them. Later I hope to use this blog to write about my experiences and thoughts while in graduate school. Then use the blog to share my thoughts and concerns working as a librarian. I am hoping this blog will document my growth over the next few years. One day I will like to look back and see what my goals, ideas and aspirations. It will be interesting to see what I have accomplished.

One of my goals is to educated the library users of all the resources libraries offer beyond the academic. Another is to bring the library back as a central role in high school education. For now though, I am familarizing myself with Web 2.0 and how it has and will affect the library and its users.
